How The Eye WorksVision is made possible when light rays are intercepted, focused, and processed by the various interrelated parts of the eye. When the eye is open, light first passes through the Cornea, the eye's transparent front "window" and main focusing element. The Cornea takes a wide spectrum of light and bends it through the Pupil, a hollow round opening in the center of the colored Iris. The Lens is located behind the Iris. The Iris expands and contracts according to light stimulation. The Lens focuses the light directly on the Retina, a photosensitive membrane that lines the inside wall of the eye. The Retina changes light images into electrical impulses and sends them through the Optic Nerve to the processing center of the brain. Your eyes are responsible for about 75% of what you perceive. Various parts of the eye are designed to perform specific tasks that change light into sight. |
